When he was 22 and was staying in Paris, Mozart wrote his so-called "Paris" Symphony in D major (K.297) for the Concerts Sprituels. Le Gros, director of these concerts, was dissatisfied with the slow movement, so Mozart replaced it with a new, shorter movement, corresponding more to the Parisian taste. "The Symphony was received with great applaus - an Le Gros is so pleased with it that he says it is his best symphony. - The Andante, however, is not fortunate enough to satisfy him, he says it contains too much modulation - and is too long..."
