Basada en hechos reales, la película cuenta la historia de amor entre la pianista Clara Wieck y Robert Schumann, compositor del siglo XIX, así como el conflicto entre Schumann y Friedrick Wieck, el padre de Clara. Ambos hombres pelean por ella y finalmente los novios recurren a los tribunales. Wieck pierde el proceso y su mundo se derrumba. Schumann se casa con Clara y le ofrece la Sinfonía de Primavera como expresión de amor y celebración por la victoria lograda tras numerosos reveses y contratiempos. Sin embargo, ésta es también la historia de cómo el tormentoso matrimonio de una mujer sensible y un trabajador incansable es destruido por la fama.

Robert Alexander Schumann es el legítimo sucesor de Schubert por lo que respecta al Lied. Gracias a él , este género alcanza un grado de perfección y una delicadeza de sentimientos insospechados. La melodía Schumanniana, menos simétrica que la de Schubert y también más libre se adapta admirablemente a las palabras.

Si el Lied de Schumann es menos teatral que el de Schubert, tiene en cambio mayor refinamiento, en más íntimo, más concentrado y conciso.

Descubren en Alemania obra inédita de Robert Schumann

La pieza se mostrará en un concierto programado para diciembre.

SBERLINGEN.- Una obra inédita del compositor alemán Robert Schumann (1810-1856) se encontró en la ciudad germana de šberlingen, junto el Lago de Constanza, comunicó hoy un portavoz del centro urbano.

Se trata de una partitura encabezada con una dedicatoria a la mujer del compositor, Clara Schumann. La directora de la Biblioteca Leopold-Sophie de šberlingen, Roswitha Lambertz, había encontrado en 2006 la partitura entre libros donados.

Más tarde, especialistas comprobaron a pedido de la ciudad que la notación musical fue obra de Schumann y que es una obra hasta ahora desconocida. En septiembre, en el marco de un concierto que se celebrará con ese motivo, se la ejecutará por primera vez.

From the violinist and Piazzolla fanatic Gidon Kremer comes this album of works by Piazzolla, along with one song in tribute to the legend. He covers a decent range of Piazzolla's work, moving equally well between slower milongas and faster tangos.

The album starts out with the relatively somber, but quite dramatic "Milonga en re." It then moves on to a more upbeat set with "Vardarito" and the grandiose "Oblivion." Then comes "Escualo," which has something nearly akin to a march driving it. The more nostalgic tone of "Cafe 1930" immediately follows, snapping the listener back into a somber mood. The grand "Concierto para quinteto" makes an appearance, followed by "Soledad" and the deeper, darker sound of "Buenos Aires hora cero." "Celos" follows, to be followed itself by Jerry Peterburshsky's tribute to Piazzolla, "El sol sueno." Many of the attributes of Piazzolla's compositions make themselves apparent in this tribute, though the strings are in places somewhat more standard than Piazzolla's music might normally lead one to be accustomed to. The album finishes on the aptly titles "Grand Tango," for simply violin and piano. Kremer is among a small handful of musicians that are able to aptly evoke the power of the music of Piazzolla to come along since the death of Piazzolla (Yo-yo Ma's masterful album of Piazzolla works also numbers with Kremer). The passion and emotion created by Piazzolla's tangos are performed nearly to perfection here, with the only downside being the absence of Piazzolla himself. The ensemble of Russians and Eastern Europeans makes a surprisingly good stab at Argentine music here, showing if nothing else the universality of Piazzolla's work. Pick it up as a fan of Piazzolla, but pick up some actual Piazzolla first as a newcomer.

Troilo y Grela

En 1953, Troilo forma un dúo con el guitarrista Roberto Grela para actuar en la obra de teatro El patio de la morocha (más parecida a un sainete que a un musical) de Cátulo Castillo, donde Troilo interpretaba el papel del bandoneonista Eduardo Arolas tocando junto a Grela. El dúo, que participó también en algunas películas y realizó varias presentaciones (incluso acompañando a cantantes), pasó luego a ser el Cuarteto Típico Troilo-Grela, con la incorporación de Edmundo Zaldívar en guitarrón y Enrique Kicho Díaz en contrabajo. Con esta formación grabó doce temas entre 1955 y 1956. En 1962, el cuarteto volvió a grabar diez temas más, ahora con Eugenio Pro en contrabajo y Ernesto Báez en guitarrón. En ambos casos, los temas son instrumentales.

What shines out from this performance even perhaps above Karl Böhm's masterly direction, is the gloriously realized Tamino of Fritz Wunderlich. To begin with his voice has a natural beauty and an ease in the topmost register which none of the other Taminos on record begin to rival. But on top of that Wunderlich, no doubt with Böhm's help, shows musical and dramatic imagination to a degree I hardly expected even after his many fine records to date. (Gramophone)

Leonard Bernstein was full of surprises. A conductor often accused of hopeless self-indulgence, he responded intuitively to the classical aesthetic of Haydn, and no less to the early Romantic bravado of Schumann. In fact, these symphonies have never been better played or conducted than they are here. These are performances of high passion--they're either very fast or very slow--and extraordinary color and drama. Bernstein sticks faithfully to the composer's original, thick orchestrations but makes each symphony work through playing of unflagging clarity and chamber music-like balance. That this was all done live, in performances of such wide emotional range, is amazing. But amazing was what Bernstein did best. --David Hurwitz

A rather heavy-handed championship of

Clara Schumann's uneven works for piano

In his warns appreciation for Clara Schumann's piano works, Gerd Nauhaus's essay claims that 'it would be very unjust.. to see her relatively small oeuvre as merely an echo or even as a lacklustre reflection of [Robert] Schumann's music.' That's easy enough to say. But after nearly four hours of only intermittendy pleasurable listening I would say that the only injustice in the kind of assessment Nauhaus deplores is that it fails to mention all the other influences on Clara.

In the first work on these three discs, the Sonata in G minor of 1841-42, her husband's A minor Concerto is looking benignly on, together with Schubert, Mendelssohn and Weber. Prior to that, much of Clara's salonish writing derives from Chopin; and later on there are signs of close encounters of the Brahmsian kind. Not that there is nothing to charm and fascinate here. There are rhapsodically dreamy pieces like the second of the Soirees musicales (Robert was so taken with the fifth of these that he used its theme to kick off his Davidskiindlertiinze) and the Quatre pieces caracteristiques, Op 5, are a delight. Like most of the music here, these were the product of a fabulously talented teenager. What heights she might have risen to, given more favourable life circumstances, we can only guess.

As Joan Chissell noted in January 1993, the recording quality is only fair. The piano is too forwardly balanced and too much pedal-thump has been captured. Even allowing for that, Jozef de Beenhouwer is not the subtlest of exponents. He copes well enough with the considerable demands of such tours de force as the Valses romantiques, but his fortissimo throughout the three discs grates on the ear, and he thuds his way through the Eel/ii Variations, obliterating any pleasure one might take in their affinities with Robert's Etudes symphoniqztes.

A useful library acquisition then, but it is not hard to imagine others making the case for Clara Schumann more eloquently. David Fanning. Gramophone. November 2001 Page 73

The latter is a work she's performed only twice before (and not for well over 20 years). There are plenty of fireworks in the outer movements, but all is not well between conductor Claudio Abbado and Argerich. In general, his approach seems to be mellower than hers; while she's emoting all over the place, say, in the first movement of the Third, Abbado is moderate and literal, keeping almost all vibrato out of the string section of the orchestra. In addition, the recording invariably favors Argerich and much orchestral detail is obscured. The listener, however, can't deny the excitement, and Argerich plays the middle movements of both concertos rhapsodically. The Second is altogether more successful, with every phrase delivered naturally, as if the piano knows instinctively where to go. This is for Argerich fans--an interesting release. --Robert Levine
